Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant Might Coming Soon to Xbox One

Microsoft’s Xbox One console reportedly will soon support for both Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant and the Google Assistant. Windows Central reports that future versions of the Xbox One dashboard include the ability to enable Alexa and Google Assistant support through a skill on both platforms. Microsoft currently only supports its own Cortana digital assistant, through its Kinect accessory or a headset, but Cortana has a limited set of skills right now.

The opening to Alexa and Google Assistants may mean that Xbox users in the future will be able to control their consoles through these two digital assistants. By now, it isn't clear what other features Microsoft will support, but the project will allow Xbox One users to make voice commands without having to use Kinect or headphones.

Albert Penello, the old member of Microsoft, has joined in Amazon lately, saying it “help figure out how to grow Alexa / Echo presence in gaming,” and if this integration goes ahead then it will be yet another major addition to Alexa’s growing presence across devices. Microsoft has also been working with Amazon to integrate Alexa and Cortana, meaning all Windows 10 PCs will soon have Alexa built into them.

Good news for consumers if all things go well, you can soon use Cortana if you want to command an Xbox One with your voice, but that's not very practical now that Kinect is no longer an option for the console. Windows Central said they expected to see announcement sooner:

“As always, plans can change at any time before launch, but I expect we'll see an official announcement about this one sooner rather than later. Former Xbox console marketing lead Albert Penello recently joined Amazon specifically to grow the Echo's presence in gaming. With Kinect out of the picture, integrating other connected speakers with Xbox is a total no-brainer.”
